Colour alone is not a reliable way to identify the species. A common frog may be olive green, brown, grey, yellowish or reddish, and individuals can alter their shade to some degree according to temperature and surroundings. Dark bars are often visible across the legs, while a dark “mask” or patch behind the eye is one of the most useful identifying features. The underside is generally pale and may have darker mottling.

Common frogs have smooth, moist-looking skin and long, muscular hind legs adapted for hopping and swimming. This helps distinguish them from common toads, which generally have drier, bumpier skin, shorter legs and a habit of walking or making shorter hops.

Males often reach the pond before females. Their quiet, low croaking attracts mates and creates the familiar sound of an active frog pond. During mating, the male holds the female in an embrace called amplexus while she releases her eggs.

Recognising frogspawn

Common frog spawn is laid in soft, jelly-like clumps, often in sunny, shallow water. This is different from common toad spawn, which is normally laid in long strings wrapped around aquatic vegetation.

Each black dot within a clump is a developing embryo surrounded by protective jelly. The jelly absorbs water and expands, helping to protect the eggs while allowing sunlight to warm them. Several females may use the same area, producing a large floating mass of spawn. Although this can look overcrowded, it is a natural part of the species’ breeding strategy.

From egg to tadpole

Hatching time depends heavily on water temperature and weather, but tadpoles may emerge after roughly two to four weeks. Newly hatched tadpoles initially remain close to the spawn jelly and nearby vegetation. As they grow stronger, they begin swimming through the pond and grazing on algae and decomposing plant material.

Not every egg or tadpole will become an adult frog. Predation, disease, poor water quality, extreme temperatures, competition and drying ponds all affect survival. Producing large numbers of eggs gives at least some young frogs a chance to complete their development.

Metamorphosis into a froglet

Tadpoles gradually develop back legs, followed by front legs. Their bodies change internally as lungs develop and their digestive system adapts to a new diet. The tail is absorbed, supplying energy during the final stages of metamorphosis.

The resulting froglets are tiny versions of adult frogs. They leave the water and seek damp, sheltered places among long grass, low plants, stones and leaf litter. At this stage they are vulnerable to drying out, garden machinery and predators, so undisturbed cover around a pond is extremely valuable.

Common frogs generally reach breeding age at around two to three years. According to the Natural History Museum, they can live for approximately five to ten years, although life in the wild presents many hazards.

Where Do Common Frogs Live Outside the Pond?

One of the most common misconceptions is that frogs live permanently in water. In reality, common frogs usually spend much of the year on land. They need ponds primarily for breeding, hydration and refuge, but they often forage in damp areas throughout the wider garden.

During spring and summer, frogs may shelter beneath dense plants, logs, stones, sheds, compost heaps and hedges. They are often most active at night or after rain, when conditions are cool and moist and invertebrate prey is easier to find.

As winter approaches, common frogs search for protected places where temperatures remain relatively stable. Some overwinter beneath logs, within leaf piles, in compost heaps or in small cavities underground. Others may spend winter at the bottom of a pond. This is why both terrestrial shelter and a healthy, oxygenated pond can matter.

Avoid making the entire garden neat and bare. A small “wild” zone containing leaves, dead wood, tussocky grass and dense planting can become essential habitat. What appears untidy to us may be a safe winter retreat or a cool daytime hiding place for a frog.

How to Create a Frog-Friendly Wildlife Pond

A wildlife pond does not need to be huge or technically complicated. Thoughtful design is much more important than scale. The best ponds combine varied depths, easy access, suitable plants and clean water with nearby land habitat.

Include shallow areas and varied depths

Shallow, gently warmed water is attractive to spawning frogs and supports many aquatic plants and invertebrates. Deeper areas give the pond greater temperature stability and reduce the risk of the whole water body freezing or drying at once.

Rather than creating steep, uniform sides, use shelves, slopes and irregular edges. This produces different microhabitats and makes the pond look more natural.

Provide an easy way in and out

Every wildlife pond needs a safe exit. A gently sloping “beach,” a planted shelf or securely positioned rough stones can allow froglets, adult frogs and other animals to leave the water. Smooth vertical walls can act as traps, particularly for small wildlife.

Check that escape routes remain usable as the water level changes. A ramp that works when the pond is full may become inaccessible during a dry summer.

Choose appropriate pond plants

Plants provide cover, spawning areas, resting places and habitat for the small invertebrates that support the pond food web. A balanced pond can include:

What Should You Do If Frogspawn Appears?

The best response is usually to observe and allow nature to take its course.

Do not move frogspawn or tadpoles from one pond to another. Although transferring spawn may appear helpful, conservation organisations advise against it because the practice can spread amphibian diseases, invasive plants and unwanted animals. It may also overcrowd the receiving pond or place the young in unsuitable conditions.

Do not collect spawn from the wild to “stock” a new pond. If your garden offers suitable habitat and frogs live in the surrounding area, they may find the water naturally. This may happen quickly, or it may take several seasons. A naturally colonised pond develops a healthier connection with its local environment.

If the pond level falls during dry weather, add water gradually and avoid sudden temperature changes. Rainwater is preferable where available. Some algae is natural and provides food, but a severe algal bloom can reduce oxygen and harm tadpoles. Rather than reaching immediately for chemical treatments, investigate the cause. Excess sunlight, decomposing material, nutrient-rich runoff, overfeeding fish or an unsuitable plant balance may all contribute.

Seasonal Pond Care for Frogs

Spring

Spring is the breeding season, so keep disturbance around spawn and shallow pond edges to a minimum. Avoid major pond cleaning, draining or plant division when eggs and tadpoles are present. Watch from a distance, keep pets under control and make sure wildlife exits remain clear.

Summer

Monitor water levels during hot, dry weather. Maintain shaded refuges and dense vegetation on land so froglets can avoid heat and dehydration. Before mowing or strimming near the pond, walk through the area carefully and check for frogs.

Autumn

Remove only part of the accumulated fallen leaves, leaving some natural cover around the pond. Carry out necessary vegetation management gradually rather than stripping the pond bare. Material taken from the water can be left beside the pond briefly, allowing small animals to crawl back, before it is composted.

Winter
